Planning a surprise party can be a really fun way to celebrate someone’s birthday. From surprise party invitations, to how to keep it a secret; we’ve put together some great tips to help you maintain the element of surprise until the very last moment.
- Select a date and send a save the date announcement to everyone you plan to invite
- Select a person to plan a fake event for the birthday person. Try to make it as realistic as possible. This not only throws the person off but also makes them available for the real event!
- When sending your party invitations, make sure you clearly note that it is a SURPRISE PARTY so that no one accidentally slips up! Check out PurpleTrail’s surprise party invites and invitation wording ideas
- Be sure to also designate the dress code on the invites you don’t want the birthday honoree to come significantly over or under dressed for their own party!

- Plan the food and activities around what the birthday honoree likes, not the party guests
- Make sure you instruct the guests to arrive at least 30 minutes before the honoree. If the guests can’t make it on time, tell them to come after the guest of honor is said to arrive.
- Make sure the person who is in charge of delivering the guest of honor is capable of maintaining a good poker face!
- Have a person in charge of organizing the party guests and has communication with the person in charge of the birthday honoree. That way the organizer can instruct the guests to hide and get ready to shout surprise when the birthday honoree is near.
If you follow these surprise party planning tips, your surprise should go off without a hitch. Happy planning!
