Diwali Explained

A major festival in India, Diwali is celebrated on a new moon night sometime in the months of October or November. The exact day of the festival is decided according to the Hindu calendar. The day is primarily celebrated to honor the return of Lord Rama from his 14 years of exile, but there are various other stories associated with the festival. Indians celebrate this day as the start of the new business year. People light up their homes 2-3 days prior to the festival and gifts are exchanged between friends and families.

Diwali is also known as Deepavali, the “deep” meaning “light” and “avali” meaning “row.” While it’s primarily and Indian holiday, Diwali is widely celebrated in many countries such as Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Nepal, Myanmar, Maurititus and Fiji. Sending cards for Diwali is a great way to wish your friends and family love, light, luck, happiness and wealth. If you have siblings, make sure to send them cards as well as traditionally brothers and sisters affirm sibling love and look after one another on the final day of Diwali.
