- Ancient Greeks and Romans built pools for athletic training.
- Roman emperors had private swimming pools in which fish were also kept, hence the Latin word for pool, piscina.
- According to the Guinness World Records, the largest swimming pool in the world is San Alfonso del Mar Seawater pool in Algarrobo, Chile. It was completed in 2006 and is 3,324 ft long and has an area of 20 acres.
- The recreational diving center Nemo 33 near Brussels, Belgium is home to the world's deepest swimming pool. It has two large flat-bottomed areas that are 16 ft deep and 32 feet deep, and a large circular pit that reaches 108 feet deep.
- Beach balls are large, soft plastic, inflatable balls which were invented in California in the year 1938 by Jonathan DeLonge.
- The balls are currently made in many different sizes, the most popular range from approximately 6 inches up to four feet.
