I love tradition, especially ones that bring good luck.  So here are a few foods to serve as part of your New Year’s celebration that are said to bring good fortune.  If you know of any others or have a family tradition of your own, leave a comment and share with the rest of us!

Post image for Good Luck Grapes for New Year’s Eve

In Spain they eat 12 grapes at midnight for good luck. Thread 12 grapes on a skewer for each guest and serve in a tall champagne flute.  Cheers to Martha Stewart for this simple and special way to test the theory.

Other good luck foods include:

  • Portuguese party-goers eat raisins to bring them good fortune in the New Year.
  • In the southern United States, black-eyed peas have long been a New Year’s Eve tradition.
  • Cabbage is a “good luck” vegetable that is consumed on New Year’s Day by many cultures.
  • Rice is a lucky food that is eaten on New Year’s Day throughout the world.
  • The Dutch eat donuts for good luck and to symbolize the completion of the year coming full circle.
  • The Chinese enjoy oranges-the word for orange sounds like the word for good luck and good fortune.
