Happy Earth Day!  Although it’s only recognized once a year, really we should do our part to celebrate Earth Day every day!  Here are 14 tips to help you celebrate Earth Day. See how many you can assimilate into your everyday life.  Every little change counts!

1. Invest in a nice, reusable coffee mug.  Some coffee places will give you a discount for bringing your own cup in.

2. Try fixing that toy, appliance, pair of pants before tossing them out!  You can turn old appliances into toys (take out any heating/cooling elements or sharp parts.  A broken toaster could provide hours of entertainment!

3. Donate your vehicle.  Volunteers of America will gladly accept it and it’s a tax write-off!

4. Only run your dishwasher when it’s full.

5. Rinse your cup or plate instead of grabbing a new one each time.  The your dishwasher won’t get full as fast and can be run less often.

6. Get a BPA free plastic or stainless steel water bottle.

7. Unplug! Once a week turn the computer, TV, stereo and everything else off. Play a board game as a family or go for a walk!

8.  Plug electronics into a power-strip that can be turned off – especially when you leave town. Even though the device isn’t on, it is still drawing power.

9. Walk, bike, run, or bus to work 2 times a week.  If that isn’t possible try and carpool a few times.

10. Buy organic and buy local.  It’s better for your body and if it’s locally offered, it uses less fuel to get to you.

11. Invest in a set of real dishes to entertain with.  You can find inexpensive sets suitable for indoor and outdoor use.  Bamboo plates and bowls are a nice alternative to paper – and you can reuse them!

12. Plant a garden.  Even if you live in an apartment, there are often local “pea patches” where you can rent a spot to plant.  Many herbs and veggies can be grown in small pots as well.  Think how nice it would be to just walk out and pick your dinner.

13. Try reusable sandwich bags instead of plastic.

14. Play outside!! We all could use more vitamin D.  Take some time to slow down and play.
