Before WWII, families also remembered Relatives and friends. It was called Decoration Day. Our family would go to the cemetary to the family site, clean the area, and leave flowers in memory. They still do this today.

RE, Why is Memorial Day”celebrated on May 30?
Actually, now it’s only observed on May 30 when the date falls on Monday. The Uniform Holidays Act set Memorial Day legal holiday on the last Monday in May beginning in 1971. Until then, it was just an observance, having no more legal status as a holiday than Flag Day.

RE, Why is (Traditional) Memorial Day “celebrated” on May 30? You might want to dig up a May 1868 calendar to get the most likely answer. Most definitely, Gen. Logan chose May 30 because it was a SATURDAY. Have you not wondered why it wouldn’t be May 31, more logically, the last day of the Month? It’s because that would have been a Sunday, & in those times, Sunday was absolutely the Lords Day, alot more so than today. He wanted everyone to participate in Decoration Day, therefore he didn’t choose a day in the middle of the week, which would have been disruptive to the workweek.
